Asbestos and Mesothelioma

While many people are aware that asbestos can be found in many buildings across the UK and that it is dangerous, few people are aware of exactly what it is and why it is so dangerous. Many are also aware that asbestos and mesothelioma are linked but they are not exactly sure how. I will now outline just what both asbestos and mesothelioma are why they are linked and how you can ensure that the two are never linked to you.

Asbestos is simply a mineral made up primarily of oxygen, hydrogen and silicone and it is naturally found in various rock formations throughout the world including those in the UK. When it is originally found, it offers very little danger to anyone however in order for it to be used in the construction industry it is first mined and then processed. When asbestos is processed it is separated into incredibly thin layers and then mixed with other materials so that it can be put back together in various shapes and sizes. For many years it was used for multiple different purposes within the construction industry due to the fact it is both incredibly durable and it is a material that many things cannot easily pass though such as heat, noise, electricity and even rodents. However it was eventually discovered that the tiny particles that the asbestos was broken into when mined can become airborne when it is disturbed. These tiny articles are both invisible to the human eye and light enough to float for hours in an unventilated room. These particles when inhaled can be fatal as they can lead to various incurable illnesses such as lung cancer and mesothelioma.

There are many illnesses that can be caused by exposure to asbestos and mesothelioma is one of those illnesses. It is a form of cancer that is primarily caused by such exposure. It is even claimed that to wash the clothes of someone that has been working around disturbed asbestos can lead to this cancer. It occurs within the protective lining that covers the body's internal organs known as mesothelium. The most common form of this cancer is within the mesothelium that covers the lungs, this is not the only form however as the mesothelium of other organs cannot also become cancerous. There is a misconception that cigarette smoking alone can cause mesothelioma but this has never been proven. The only relationship that has been proven is that a smoker is more susceptible to the dangers of asbestos.

The relationship between Asbestos and Mesothelioma

Exposure to asbestos has been proven to cause this fatal disease. The reason that this relationship remained unknown for such a long time is that it takes between fifteen and forty years for the initial exposure to lead to the development of the disease. Because of this many of the people who are today dieing as a result of mesothelioma are doing so as a result of being exposed to asbestos as far back as the seventies when the dangers were completely unknown.
